About Us

Janice Joplin sings “o lord won`t you buy me a Mercedes Benz”
Our prayers are answered two fold. Aptly named Tiana- Jane and Charlie George
Our 2 new Actros big space cabs are sure to turn some heads delivering steel up and down the country. Whilst in cab the drivers enjoy the comforts of home with fridge freezer and microwaves fitted, we benefit from one of the most economical and reliable vehicles on the road.

New Commercial Director

In August 2013 Malcolm Clarke Steel appointed a new Commercial Director, Julie Kershaw re-joins Clarkes Steel after an absense of six years, during which time she gained valuable and diverse experience elsewhere in the steel industry. From 1992 to 2007 Julie worked for Clarkes and was instrumental in driving the company through it's most productive and profitable period so far, in it's 35 year history. As Commercial Director Julie will take charge of all the companies purchasing decisions, direct the sales team and the overall day to day commercial management of the company. Assisted by Sales Manager - Craig Thompson and Mike Mellor - Works & Transport Manager. An enviable team commited to customer service, delivery and product quality.

Steel before flattening

Recent Projects
One of our customers asked

"Can you flatten some 25 - 35 mm cones which are cut in half?"

As you can see from the before and after pictures, of course we can!

Phil Holmes heads up our flattening and decoiling operations, he`s lost count on the no. of people he`s trained up over the 34 years he`s worked at clarkes.
While most work on tolerances of 3mm/metre “the perfectionist” insists on less than 1mm/metre.

“Jez” Knight is our warehouse supervisor.
He`s the man who unloads the coils for our decoilers, loads the coils onto the decoilers, unloads the sheet from the decoilers,
Stocks the sheet in the warehouse , picks the orders loads the vehicles and keeps  the place tidy, always with a smile on his face !!

William (billy whizz) Hayes drives our 7.5 tonner, a lot slower now it`s restricted !!     Life time  member of the Clarkes rally team.

Michael Shaugnessy The Man of Steel

Michael Shaughnessy "The Man of Steel"
Drives around the yard in his fork truck smoking.........His Bic pen !!!
Has an eagle eye for a cast/heat no. (now his son Daniel heads up our test cert dept.)
Hobbies.... We best not go there!
Headhunted several times in his career in the steel stockholding inustry.

Steve Smith recently received an award for 35 years service and
notched up his 60th birthday shortly afterwards. Still fit enough
to put in a full shift in our stock yard in all weather conditions
but gave up playing football a while ago.
As you can see from his shirt he still follows his beloved
Manchester City when he's not looking after his grandchildren.

Peter Whittaker, has worked in the steel trade for best part of 40yrs,
retiring at Christmas 2012 after 34yrs with clarkes steel.
He has probably sold in excess of 400,000 tonnes of steel plate and satisfied the needs of thousands of customers.
In his short retirement he has been busy getting a few little jobs done around his Yorkshire dwelling, dry stone walling and a bit of tree surgery featuring amongst his recent projects.
Peter`s back, out of retirement back at his desk, selling even more steel plate on a part time basis. Watch this space!
